		<description>Ocotitlán House
2014
Location: Morelos, Mexico
DENA built this off-the-grid house in a remote, mountainous area where conditions were extreme: there was no water or electricity and the site, a steep hillside, was practically inaccessible. We developed the architectural project around a stone base serving two purposes: storing rainwater and creating a leveled platform to support the house’s structure, completely prefabricated in our Mexico City workshop.
This project was the departure point for Maleza, a feature-length film. Somewhere between fiction and documentary, it narrates both an architectural construction process and the relationships developed between the people working on it.

Design and construction by DENAProject team: Gabriela López Dena, Alejandro López, Alex Ezpeleta, Guillermo Galindo, Raymundo Cardozo, Rubén Reyes

		<description>INCOMPLTwith Etienne Chambaud&#38;nbsp;2016Video (color, sound)Duration: 31:12 min
Shot in a mountain forest in the Mexican state of Michoacán, the film depicts scenes from the annual migration of millions of monarch butterflies. In a pastoral-looking landscape covered with these intricately-patterned insects, a giant ice sculpture exists incongruously: a mound of individually carved objects. Its shimmering white surface constitutes a formal counterpart to the darker surroundings and its scale is difficult to discern in relation to the landscape. Individual butterflies land on the ice, yet their response is equally difficult to read.

An invisible web by day is set aflame at night in a luminous pattern as complex as the history of the installation’s site: Tlatelolco. This Mexico City neighborhood was built during the Aztec period in 1300, and since then, it has been layered with constructions of the diverse cultures that have occupied it. Prehispanic pyramids, a colonial church, and a modernist complex all coexist simultaneously in its central plaza.

In this context, Xipe Tótec stands as an architectural intervention, adding one more layer to the four facades of an iconic tower originally built as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. To celebrate its transition into a Cultural Center, Thomas Glassford and Gabriela López Dena created a red and blue veil of neon-like LEDs based on the geometry of quasicrystals and aperiodic tiling. In the 1970s, Western scientists, including Roger Penrose, “discovered” these patterns as a mathematical conundrum, but then quasicrystal formations were found to exist in nature and used in the tiles of Persian mosques as early as the 12th Century.

		<description>Fractal Zoo
with Etienne Chambaud&#38;nbsp;2013
InstallationSteel, bronze, pigeons’ feathers and excerement, coloringDimensions variable

Fractal Zoo is a self-supporting structure with no fixed shape that has been inhabited and abandoned by pigeons. It is composed of bronze human figures crossed over by industrial beams. On this fragile yet massive structure, birds have lived, yet are gone. What remains of them are sketches of their feathers and traces of their induced colored feces.

For this work, DENA designed and fabricated the steel structural system that shaped the installation. Through a lost-wax process, we also created fifteen bronze human heads that work as mechanical joints. Additionally, DENA carried out the installation process in the gallery space.

DUO is a restaurant owned by Swizz chef David Muller and Mexican pastry-maker Estefanía Robles. In an Art Deco building in Mexico City’s Colonia Condesa, they found the ideal space to host DUO, a project mixing sweet and savory flavors from booth of their countries.
The property was completely renovated and the layout was altered so it could be converted to a restaurant, with the kitchen at the front. The historic character of the building was maintained and several skylights were added to create small interior courtyards and naturally illuminate the space.
